Karachi’s business community on Friday urged Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani to amend laws so that criminals could not benefit from any lacunas in the process of law and administration of justice. In a meeting with traders, Gilani said he would soon convene a meeting of the country’s political leadership to apprise them of the security situation in Pakistan.
The prime minister assured them that the country’s defence was strong and the nation would not allow any aggressor to fiddle with its frontiers. He said political and economic stability of the country was interlinked, directing the Sindh government to take an across-the-board action against criminals, targeted killers and extortionists. He said only political solutions were durable and all other solutions produced short-term relief.
Gilani said he had sent Interior Minister Rehman Malik to Karachi with clear directions that he should extend full cooperation to the Sindh government in its endeavours to bring normalcy in the metropolis. Gilani said it was the basic responsibility of the government to protect the life and property of its citizens.
“The government is aware of its responsibilities,” he said, and expressed firm resolve that the government could not afford to leave the city at the mercy of gangsters and mafias.
