White Lies

Nothing succeeds like success. But where’s the fun in that, the challenge? Surely if one is a Khadim-e-Aala, nothing short of reinventing the wheel will do.

So if you want to seek foreign assistance in the fight against dengue, don’t be a spoilt little princess by going after countries which have met the crisis with relative success (South Korea, Vietnam) but go after one that has been fighting it since 30 years and still struggling: Sri Lanka.

Apparently, His CMness was dialling around to see where he could seek inspiration from. So he dialled away to a Pakistani diplomat in Sri Lanka, a personal favourite of his.

Our artist’s representation of what the phone call would have sounded like:

What? You mean to say there is dengue fever in Sri Lanka as well?

Yes, sir.

Why don’t we bring some experts over to Lahore?

But sir…..

(Other end of the line hangs up.)

How the mighty fall! The man who was once the architect of the Punjab CM’s design of how to run the province had to be removed some while back from his post after his car hit an unfortunate war buddy of some of the high and mighty. Well, now he has been virtually stripped bare as well: his official cars and domestic help were removed from his residence recently. Since it is unlikely that the aforementioned high and mighty would have insisted on this as well, perhaps the gentleman has fallen out of the CM’s favour also.

Some of his (many) detractors wouldn’t be resisting their chuckles. Ah, the intrigues of the ghulaam gardishes.

All residents of the Lahore cantonment are equal but some are more equal than the others. Military Lands & Cantonments department manuals might not read like Orwell but that’s what is happening on the ground.

The cantonment authorities, otherwise so anal about protecting the green patches of the area, look the other way when the illustrious son (well, he cuts quite a figure) of an illustrious late general turned a green patch adjoining his house into a virtual parking lot for his visitors.
