Rabbani remembered

The life of Burhanuddin Rabbani, the ex-president of Afghanistan, has been taken by two suicide bombers who approached him to shake hands during a meeting but then exploded themselves.

One had reportedly explosives in his turban. Rabbani was born on 20 September, 1940 and died on 20 September 2011. Having received a Masters degree in Islamic Philosophy from Al-Azhar University, he returned to Kabul and organised Jamaat-e-Islami, Afghanistan.

He was considered a moderate leader. He preached brotherhood among different clans of Afghans and wanted to knit them into a strong force to act against foreign forces. He remained the President of Afghanistan from 1992 to 1996. A representative of moderation in Afghanistan with balanced thoughts and cool mind has been ruthlessly killed by religious fanatics. Such ghastly incidents can only eventually bring chaos to politics.
