Murdered peace envoy Burhanuddin Rabbani was buried in Kabul on Friday, mourned by thousands of angry Afghans including some who were forced back by bodyguards firing warning shots into the air.
Rabbani was interred on a hill overlooking Kabul in chaotic scenes that saw some mourners throw stones at government officials’ cars, triggering the warning shots which ended the brief disturbance, an AFP reporter said.
A sea of thousands of mourners, waving black flags and placards, surrounded the coffin as it was carried to the grave.
They chanted slogans including “Death to the Taliban” and “Death to Conspirators”, a reference to the belief of some that elements in the High Peace Council were involved in the death.
The burial was marked by a cannon salute fired from Kabul’s diplomatic zone.
