Citing security reasons, Rahim Yar Khan district authorities put Malik Ishaq, leader of the banned terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, and his deputy Ghulam Rasool under house arrest for 10 days early on Thursday. Ishaq was confined to his house on orders of the Punjab government after tension between Sunnis and Shias increased significantly. Ishaq had been released on bail in July after spending nearly 14 years behind bars over his accused role in numerous sectarian murders.
He is also accused of masterminding an attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team. He had just recently received his passport to perform Umrah. According to reports, LJ activists brutally murdered Shias in Mastung to avenge an attack on Ishaq in Alipur.
