British authorities reopened a terminal at Manchester Airport in northwest England on Wednesday after it was closed for several hours following the discovery of a suspicious device, police said.
Greater Manchester Police said in a statement they made aware of a “suspicious bag” in Terminal 1 shortly before 0730 GMT but it turned out not to be dangerous.
“The package being examined by bomb disposal experts at Manchester Airport is not a suspicious device,” said the statement.
A statement from the airport said the terminal reopened at 1110 GMT. Authorities did not give any more details about the bag.
A man was being interviewed under anti-terrorism legislation in relation to the device, police said.
Phil Davies, the police commander at the airport, said: “We were alerted to something that appeared to be a suspicious device and as a precaution we evacuated Terminal 1.
“This incident shows that the security measures we have in place are effective and play an important role and when we get a security alert like this we will leave nothing to chance.”
An airport spokeswoman said a small number of flights had been delayed but none cancelled.
“Things are getting back to normal quite fast,” she said.
The device was spotted either by security staff or while going through an X-ray, the airport said.
