Representatives of civil society and non-governmental organisations have severally criticised the government and its institutions saying that the flood wreaked havoc in Sindgh because of the inability and failure of the government and its institutions. They asked the journalists and civil society to donate generously for the relief and rehabilitation of the flood affected people of Sindh. Addressing a news conference here on Wednesday, Jami Chandio, an expert on water-related distastes, said around twenty two districts of Sindh had been badly affected by the flood. He said that according to the official figure 1.3 millions houses were destroyed and eight million people had to migrate.
Naseer Memon, a journalist, said the performance of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) had been most dismal in that regard as the relief measures undertaken by the authority fell short of the requirements on the ground. He said the NDMA, Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) and the government were currently indulging in a “pass the buck” exercise, each blaming the other for not responding adequately to the crisis. Ali Asghar Trust Chairman Ali Asghar and Sarwar Bari from Sungi also spoke on the occasion and said that there were Rs 60 million funds available in the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund but the authorities were not willing to use that amount for the welfare of the flood affected people. The speakers demanded immediate relief measures and rehabilitation of people in the flooded areas.
