Islamabad based Sindhi writers and poets, through a resolution, have expressed dissatisfaction over equitable distribution of relief goods among flood affected people in Sindh and demanded the government to give this task to the impartial people. In a meeting of Sindhi Adbi Sangat Islamabad Chapter held here on Tuesday, they demanded of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to take suo moto notice of fallacious plan of Left Bank Outfall Drainage (LBOD) and stern action against those involved in this plan. The meeting was arranged to discuss the flood situation in Sindh and review relief activities and presided over by prominent writer Ali Qazi, said a press release issued here today.
Ali Qazi said the recent rains have destroyed economy of Sindh as well as badly affected agriculture sector due to which the country might face crises of rice, wheat and sugar and will have to export cotton. Stranded water and unavailability of clean water in the flood affected areas will increase risk of skin and stomach diseases among the people, he said while urging the government to take appropriate measures to save citizens from outbreak of epidemic diseases. He lamented that several TV channels are not sparing more than an hour for the coverage of floods and emphasized on giving proper coverage to this disaster so that the affectees are given proper relief. He said the literary organizations and writers must come forward to help the affected people in this need of hour. Another eminent writer Gohar Ghanghro said the nation must show unity among their ranks to bring the affected people out of crisis.
I could not agree more with the Sindhi Adbi Sangat Islamabad Chapter about the situation on ground in hundreds of flood ravaged villages. Some of them are still in emergency situation and disconnected.There is no denying that the emergency response to floods in Sindh has been inaeduquate. The other worrying factor is that there has been duplication and overlapping with some districts which hogged media light had all the actors converging and the others remote and inacessible districts suffered silently.__Though much needs to be done , there are some notables examples of good humanitarian work. Among them is modest relief work done by Imran Khan Foundation in the worst affected Union Councils of the ten districts.__Along with my team, I visited far away villages and saw for my self the revolting condition of the hundreds of families stranded in these areas, as their homes were submerged. IKF had by October 30th distributed food packets containing flour, rice, sugar, lentils, cooking oil to over 300,000 families in the districts of Badin, Sanghar, Mirpur Khas, Tando Mohammad Khan, Umer Kot, Khairpur, Nausehro Feroze and Dadu.
I thought it worthwhile to add another comment to the relief effort to say that no relief effort can succeed without the active participation of the local communities.__. A redeeming feature of IKF relief effort is that it is being lead by Young Village Volunteers drawn from the villages hit by the floods. Their participation ensures that foold relief reached the most needy and marginalized.
