The City District Government Karachi (CDGK) started the second phase of its fumigation campaign on Monday, spraying insecticide on the walls of houses.
Karachi District Coordination Officer Mohammad Hussain Syed launched the campaign.
The first phase of the campaign is still under way in which fumigation is being carried out in and around the houses of dengue fever patients. Over 40,000 houses will be covered in this phase.
The insecticides used in the second phase of the campaign would kill mosquitoes glued to walls of houses and be effective for four months.
The CDGK said that the spray poses no threat to the lives of humans or animals and would not affect the paint on walls.
The city government said that a new technology is being used for the house-to-house fumigation, 25 spray teams formed, 150 officials trained especially for this purpose and over 50,000kg of insecticide purchased.
On Monday, the city government completed the fumigation campaign at houses located in SITE Town, Mianwali Colony, North Karachi near Peela School, North Nazimabad Haroon Heights Sector-11, Keamari Town, Shabbir Nazim building street No 44, Gulberg Town near Dastagir Colony, North Nazimabad Town Block J, Korangi Town Nasir Colony Sector 32 B and D Area Qayyumabad.
The DCO also directed that the number of spray teams be increased so that more houses could be covered daily.
Separately, the CDGK has given the malaria insecticide fumigation department under the control of the Municipal Services Group of Offices as a temporary arrangement.
This action has been taken in view of the heavy workload on the Sindh Health Department which is making arrangements for the influx of the flood affectees from the interior parts of the province into the city as well as carrying out an anti-polio drive.
Municipal Services Executive District Officer Dr Shaukat Zaman would monitor the spray campaign.
