The Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) Sindh would start a door-to-door three-day campaign in the city on Monday (today) to vaccinate four million under-five children against polio. “The sub-national immunisation days (SNIDs) starting from Monday are only being observed in Karachi and not the rest of the province,” said EPI Sindh Manager Dr Mazhar Khamisani said on Sunday. “Due to rains and floods, SNIDs will begin in other parts of the province from September 26,” he added. He said that 2.5 million children will be administered oral polio vaccines (OPV) from September 26 to September 29 in all other high-risk areas of the province. “There would be 18,000 teams of vaccinators, including 6,000 for Karachi, to vaccinate children against the virus that continues to affect children,” he said. “Each team in Karachi will vaccinate a group of 200 to 250 children against 100 to 150 children by their counterparts in other parts of the province.” Dr. Khamisani said that 17 confirmed cases of polio have been reported in the province during the current year and these include four from Karachi only. “These cases were reported from Orangi, Saddar, SITE and Baldia towns,” he added. The cases in other districts were reported from Thatta, Badin, Sanghar, Tando Mohammad Khan, Umerkot, Jamshoro and Tando Allahyar.
