Former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram has advised the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to consult national players before appointing the new head-coach. The PCB is currently in hunt of a coach after Waqar Younis’ resignation due to medical problems. Moreover, the governing body is also aiming to nurture a new captain who can lead the side till the next World Cup. In his recent interview to PakPassion, Akram lashed out at PCB’s irrational policies, saying that had he been the chairman of the cricket board, he would have named a skipper for at least one year, and would take suggestions from the players before appointing a fresh coach. He reasoned that the players’ advice is very important regarding the coach’s selection, as they are the ones who will be working with the man. Responding to the questions regarding the first two things he would do if he is given the responsibility to run cricket affairs in the country, Akram said, “First of all I would just try to have one leader and at least announce him for a year, and then get a coach and obviously get a guy who the boys will get along with. Either it’s a foreign coach, or it’s a Pakistani coach, whoever, you should ask the boys first because they are going to be working with him.” He asked PCB not to go for a foreign coach, as there are many experienced and talented cricketers within the country who can do a terrific job. Akram was earlier offered the post of head-coach but the legendary fast bowler refused, following his engagements in India. Wasim said that after settling down the issues with the coach and the captain, the PCB should concentrate on grooming young talent since they are the future of Pakistan cricket. “The PCB has such wonderful facilities in Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, everywhere, have people getting their youngsters, especially in summer where nobody does anything for a couple of months, to come,” added the former great who has over-500 wickets to his credit in the 50-over format of the game.
