The police arrested five persons and recovered huge quantity of stolen relief goods sent by a foreign country for flood
affectees of last year.
According to police, the accused were shifting the relief goods, including tents, blankets, generators and other preserved food, from a government godown located in Malir area to another location but the police, on a tip off, approached them and arrested five accused and recovered the relief foods.
The dwellers of the area told police that Provincial Disaster Management Cell (PDMC) personnel were involved in large scale corruption in relief goods items and they, during night, used to shift the relief items from the said godown to an unknown location.
Sources said that at least 90 percent of the relief goods kept in an institute established in a government college near Malir University have been manhandled.
The police said that several people, mostly PDMC personnel have been arrested for theft of relief goods during past few months. The detainees have admitted their involvement in theft of relief goods, the police claimed.
On the other hand, Director General PDMC Saleh Farooqi insisted that the PDMC personnel were shifting the relief goods from one godown to the other to vacate space for students in the said institution.
He said that some elements who wanted to get relief goods using illegal procedure after failure in their attempts were trying to defame PDMC and not a single item of the relief goods have been misplaced.
