The deadlock between Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) remains to be broken despite a series of meetings at the Governor’s House, Pakistan Today has learnt. On Friday, former federal law minister Senator Babar Awan called on Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad but the meeting bore no fruit. As the head of the presidential committee to persuade MQM to join the government, Awan has become increasingly active in talks with the MQM that are going on behind the scene.
Despite telephonic contacts between MQM chief Altaf Hussain and PPP co-chairman President Asif Zardari and positive statements of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani regarding government’s relations with the MQM, things on the outside seem to be stuck as no other MQM members have attended the meeting with PPP central leaders. Insiders told Pakistan Today that after Dr Zulfiqar Mirza tirade of accusations against the MQM, the PPP has changed its stance and it has become difficult to accept all conditions put up by the MQM.
“The emerging situation is not favorable for the MQM as it cannot press on its agenda and points of agreement and conditions,” they said. Both parties are not playing on the same ground as the level and points have changed for both but now the PPP leadership is not ready to accept all conditions of MQM. While both parties are ‘hopeful’ and ‘friendly’ with each other but behind the scenes ‘all is not well’ between them as the meeting on Friday also could not bring about a mentionable breakthrough.
