Lahore High Court Justice Khalid Mehmood Khan on Friday issued notice to the federal government on a writ petition challenging Pakistan Railways’ decision of getting locomotives on lease from India. During the hearing, the judge remarked that corrupt officers of railways had looted the department and now the poor were facing numerous problems.
The judge ordered federal railways secretary to file a reply within two weeks. Ansar Mahmood Jaspal had filed the petition submitting that the federal government decided to get 50 locomotives from India on lease to make the train service’s smooth functioning. He said Risalpur Factory had the capacity to manufacture 25 locomotives per year; therefore, the government should utilise its own resources instead of seeking help from India.
Petitioner prayed the court restrain the government from getting locomotives from India and be directed to utilise national resources. Moreover, he said the railways be ordered to make functional its 450 out-of-order locomotives.
