The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Thursday allowed the Hindu community to perform their religious obligations and rights of worship in the historic temple at tehsil Gorgatri.
A two-member bench comprising PHC Chief Justice Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan and Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth allowed the petition of Phool Watti, a Hindu lady, who had challenged the handing over of said temple into government’s custody.
The petitioner’s lawyer argued that the said temple was established before the creation of Pakistan and was in custody of Police until 1960.
Later, it was handed over to Archeology Department. He claimed that his client and her entire family was being ousted from this temple and was not being allowed to perform their religious obligations.
He prayed the court to allow his client and her family to perform worship without being displaced. Earlier in his remarks, the CJ said Islam teaches about the protection of worship places of minorities and rights of non-Muslims.
