Cameron phones Gilani, discusses flood situation

British Prime Minister David Cameron on Friday telephoned Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and discussed with him recent situation of floods in Pakistan. Gilani apprised Cameron that he had called off his visit to the United Nations in view of the devastating floods and would tour the flood-hit areas to supervise relief and rescue work.
Cameron supported Gilani’s decision of prioritizing his people in distress. The prime minister informed his British counterpart that he had directed Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar to attend the session of the UN General Assembly. On the UNGA sidelines, he said his meeting was scheduled with Afghan President Hamid Karzai which would have provided good opportunity to discuss the latest situation in the region.

UNHCR pledges $ 20 million relief package
MNA Asma Arbab Alamgir, honorary ambassador of UNHCR, and Mengeasha Kebede, representative of UNHCR, called on Prime Minister Gilani here on Friday and committed a special package on behalf of UNHCR worth 20 million dollars for the flood and rain affected people of Sindh and Balochistan. According to the representatives of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), it is a rapid response to the Prime Minister’s appeal to the International Community to help the victims of rain and floods.
MNA Asma assured the prime minister that UNHCR will continue to extend support to the victims of the devastation in the first place and also in the rehabilitation later on. The prime minister appreciated the timely provision of tents, plastic sheets, medicines, clean drinking water etc. when these goods are most urgently required.
