Classwork is continuing at Sharif College of Engineering and Technology (SCET) despite Punjab government orders to close all educational institution, Pakistan Today has learnt. Dengue has landed on various students of the college, who demand SCET’s closure until dengue was bridled. SCET is a project of Sharif Trust and its Board of Trustees include Pakistan Muslim League-N President Mian Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif and Mian Abbas Sharif. Sharif Education City is located at Jaati Umrah Raiwind.
Students said hat the varsity administration gave just one holiday on Friday and has asked the students to show up on Monday, while the Punjab Higher Education Department (HED) has directed all the city varsities, public and private, to close their campuses for ten days. They said that it was quite unfortunate that on one side the Punjab government was closing all the educational institutes by force but had turned a blind eye on their own institute.
A student of SCET, suffering with dengue, told Pakistan Today that the students had asked the administration to close the institute but unfortunately they were unwilling to do so. He said that his platelet count was continuously going down which could increase the danger for other students as well. He said that the varsity gave just one holiday for fumigation clearly neglecting the directions of Punjab HED. Students also said that area where the college was situated was a heaven for dengue mosquitoes to breed owing to huge lawns and greenery. Another student, who requested anonymity, said that students already feared to go to the college and his parents were also asking him to come back to his native city Faisalabad but he could not miss the classes. Schools and a medical college also work under the Sharif Trust but the schools have been closed by the administration which proves that SCET also comes under the Lahore’s civil administration.
Punjab Government Spokesman Pervez Rasheed said that it was up to the civil administration of the city to take action against any such educational institute and said that he was not sure that whether SCET came under the jurisdiction of Lahore’s civil administration or not. Provincial Education Minister Punjab Mian Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman told Pakistan Today that he would take a stern action against all institutes which were still continuing classes. He said that he was not informed that SCET was still conducting its classes. Medical colleges were not closed because they were working on the awareness campaigns and the medical students were aware of the precautionary measures. He also said that although the Punjab government directed all the varsities to close their campuses but vice chancellors of the respective varsities made final decision in this regard. He acknowledged that engineering colleges came under Punjab HED.
