Rainwater and overflowing sewage flooded almost all roads of Karachi after rains lashed the city on Monday night and Tuesday.
Despite the availability of pumping machines, the roads around the Sindh Secretariat were also submerged and water continued to accumulate there.
The areas of the Sindh High Court and the Sindh Assembly were also overwhelmed with sewage and rainwater.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan and Karachi District Coordination Officer Muhammad Hussain Syed had directed the officials concerned to ensure precautionary measures to cope with the rain situation, but in vain.
Moreover, the Karachi Electric Supply Company also failed to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the citizens.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) recorded 64.5mm rain in Gulshan-e-Hadeed, 51mm at the Jinnah International Airport, 47.5mm on the University Road, and 31.5mm in Saddar Town.
The rainwater flooded the MA Jinnah Road, the II Chundrigar Road, the Shahrah-e-Faisal, and other major and minor roads that caused traffic gridlocks all across the city.
Electric supply remained suspended to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and the Civil Hospital Karachi that afflicted the patients.
According to reports received from the residents of the areas affected by the rains, rainwater flooded the houses in many parts of the metropolitan.
Besides the muezzins at various mosques, people started reciting the azan from their houses to seek God’s mercy and to pray for stopping the incessant rains. The PMD has forecasted more rains on Wednesday (today) in different localities of the metropolis.
