Pre-engineering, Science General results out

The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) declared on Monday the results of Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) Pre-engineering and Science General groups annual examinations 2011.
PRE-ENGINEERING: The top three positions were clinched by the students of the Adamjee Government Science College – namely Syed Hasan Murtaza (90.72 percent), Muhammad Asad Rizvi (90.54 percent), and Syed Muhammad Askar (90.36 percent).
“The three of us are close friends and we had made a commitment to one other to bag the top positions since female candidates usually top the annual exams. It was our dream to shine in the annual exam,” Murtaza said.
Rizvi gave credit to his parents and teachers, and said his father, who is a teacher, was behind his struggle.
The toppers said they attended the college regularly and it is a misconception that teachers do not take classes at the educational institutions.
A total of 17,795 male candidates registered; 17,359 appeared in the exams; and 8,841 were declared pass. The overall pass percentage was 51.42. The number of female students registered of these exams was 6,271, out of which 6,211 appeared and 3,330 passed. The overall pass percentage was 53.61.
According to the BIEK controller of examinations, 17 cases of using unfair means were reported during and after the exams.
According to a break-up in terms of grades, 756 male and 279 female candidates achieved A-One grade, 1,763 male and 810 female students passed the exams with A grade, 2, 068 male and 1,030 female candidates with B grade, 2,554 male and 976 female students with C grade, 1,591 male and 234 female candidates with D grade and 109 male and one female student with E grade.
SCIENCE GENERAL: BAMM PECHS Zainab Parveen and Faryal Sharf of Government College for Women bagged the first (85.90 percent) and second (85.54 percent) positions, respectively, whereas Zainab Ahmed of the DA Degree College for Women, DHA Phase VIII, bagged the third position (85.27 percent).
Parveen said that changes in textbooks would definitely help improve teaching standards. Sharf said Urdu should be given an opportunity similar to English in terms of the medium of teaching.
Ahmed said that lack of funds and its utilisation is among the major issues confronting the the education sector.
According to the gazette issued, 878 male candidates registered for the exams, out of which 868 appeared and 279 passed. The overall pass percentage was 32.14. The gazette further shows that 785 female students registered for the exams, 779 appeared and 282 passed. The overall pass percentage was 36.2.
According to the BIEK controller of examinations, only one case of using unfair means was reported.
Only one male and nine female students achieved the A-One grade, 15 male and 38 female students passed with A grade, 47 male and 107 female students with B grade, 131 male and 116 female candidates with C grade, 74 male and 11 female students with D grade and 11 male candidates and one female with E grade in the exams.
BIEK Chairman Anwar Ahmed Zai gave a ‘token of appreciation’ to the Memon Girls College, FB Area; Quaid-e-Azam Higher Secondary School and Iqra Hufza Science Girls College, Block-B, Nazimabad for producing 100 percent pass results in the Pre-Medical Annual Examinations.
The colleges that produced less than 20 percent pass results in the annual exams would submit their justification that would be reviewed at the Board Office and then forwarded to the higher authorities for their recommendations, the BIEK chairman said.
