At least 27 people were injured on Saturday when five bogies of the Lahore-Rawalpindi Rawal Express derailed near Sarai Alamgir.
Railway sources suspected that the accident might have been a sabotage attempt by the railway employees who were sacked or sent on forced leave.
According to railways officials, rescue teams and local resident had started rescue operation. The injured were taken to hospitals in Jhelum and Gujrat by the Rescue 1122. Condition of none of the injured was reported to be critical. On the other hand, the Railway Administration had not started repair of the broken track due to which railway traffic still remained suspended.
Pakistan Railway Information Department official Rubina Nasir told Pakistan Today that Pakistan Railways Assistant General Manager Anjum Pervaiz was also on board the train, however he remained unhurt in the accident. The official denied that the accident could be a terrorist activity. She added that Railways General Manager Saeed Akhter had ordered an investigation into the accident.
Meanwhile, according to media reports, after the accident, the Pakistan Railways had to cancel the scheduled trains from Rawalpindi to Lahore and Karachi to Lahore.
