TV journalist sacked under political pressure

TV anchor Nusrat Javaid claimed on Hamid Mir’s Capital Talk show late on Friday that he had been sacked by Aaj TV and his show had been taken off air for “technical reasons”. Javaid said he had been accused of bias against Urdu-speaking people and said he was related to many and had absolutely no bias against them.
Following Javaid’s comments, a battle of words erupted between Mir and Awami National Party (ANP) spokesman Senator Zahid Khan when the latter ‘warned’ Mir his channel might be shut down as well if he spoke his mind. Mir lambasted Khan in a live broadcast, saying the Pakistani media had dealt with much worse “political gangsters”, such as former president Pervez Musharraf, than the ones who had forced Aaj TV to shut down Javaid’s show. Javaid had implied that his show had been pulled off the air because of pressure from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement.

  2. We have seem how free the so called independent media is and how susceptible their owners are to pressures. For over 6 hours all private TV channels held their viewers hostage to what they called an important press conference. In the end it turned out to be 3 hours of comical theatrics and nothing more. If this is how an independent media behaves, can we imagine how a captive media would have behaved. As for Nusrat Javed, he will have other more attractive offers. I think AAJ Tv will be forced to take him back, otherwise they will lose their viewers.

  6. All the TV channels showed their true colours. – they are so afraid of Altaf Hussain that they did not interrupt his 'press' conference (classic buffoonery) with a single ad. When the TV channel owners are so scared, – the journalists who work in them cannot afford to be objective and critical – any who does gets the boot.

    Bravo!!! do not surrender!!! As Mr Hamid Mir warned Mr Zahid Khan on live – media is now free – political tout could never make the media surrender!!!! Today is not 1980 era; we are in 2011.

  8. When will these TV channels gather courage to stand up against MQM. The response to arm twisting by MQM thugs should be to boycott utterly to any speech of supremo Altaf and his minions in Karachi. There may be a short lived financial damage but will herald complete freedom from the shackles of MQM. Otherwise it would be construed that the media is itself biased on ethnic lines and willing partner of the MQM in continuing subjugation of the media.

    Nusrat Javeed's fault was that he called spade a spade without mincing his words. Altaf Hussain was parodying Aasha Bhosle's song and he looked ridiculous and he was hurling Holy Quran from one side of his greasy head again and again and wrongly reciting verses from Quran the Aaj TV did not mind but when Nusrat Javeed mocked Altaf this became a crime. Unfortunately, TV channels like Aaj Tv are partners with MQM and no wonder truth does not come out from this and other channels.

  10. altaf bhai has his unique and peculiar style which is endearing and folksy and if some one doesn't like it he can go take a hike.
    what is the use of these so called mature and serious politicians like gillani and chaudhry who mumble absolute nonsense, others with misleading lies and falsehoods spoken just because a microphone or fish is thrust in their face.
    Altaf bahi has the courage to speak the truth however painful and pinching it maybe.
    we should learn to be tolerant and fair.

  12. Even though Hamid Mir did teach the MQM thugs on whose channel they were talking but seriously I am with "Observer from UK" who commented above that ALL THE TV CHANNELS SHOULD BOYCOTT MQM AND NO ONE SHOULD GIVE THEM AIRTIME TO SPREAD FELONY AND MISCHIEF.

  14. @Amna. Thanks Amna supporting me for my views on MQM's strong arm tactics vis a vis media. Frankly speaking it is the media to blame as well because they do not have guts to stand up against these thugs. For how long MQM will keep them in shackles.Some of the journalists are more than willing to toe their line. I can discern some change in the attitude of media towards MQM and by the passage of time and with the follies of MQM leaders they are becoming more assertive. The taboo has been shattered in one million small fragments by Dr Zulfiqar Mirza.

    I did notice in the Capital Talk last night for the first time that MQM goebbels' were on defensive. All these democrats which appears on TV chat can be vitriolic and foul mouthed when their Qaid was 'insulted' by someone during chat shows. Not any more.
    You would have noticed that Mustafa Kamal and Hyder Abbas Rizvi are on the receiving end. MK was incoherent. He was the one who only a few days ago claimed that this 2011 not 1992. He was quite right. This is 2011 and lot of water has flown under the bridge, The TV channels were non existent in 1992, Now there is a media which is freeing itself from the clutches of MQM and any and every thuggish deed by mafiosi can not be hidden..

    I tried to communicate with you on twitter yesterday. I am not sure you read my tweets in your support in the name of khoabr.
    I sent strong condemnation letter to the management of Aaj TV channel through their website last night and by email this morning. It was a shameful act by the management to succumb to pressure of MQM so easily.

    I also heard you on Capital Talk and Hyder Abbas RIzvi who can speak white lies vehemently denied any pressure from MQM and he offered to act as your advocate before the management of Aaj TV. This was ridiculous. I was bit disappointed with Hamid Mir who appeared to be fuming but then relegated the matter to Hyder Abbas Rizvi or in other words referring your case to the MQM leader Abbas Rizvi to speak to the management to get you reinstated.

    The whole nation supports the stand taken by and condemns the management of Aaj TV.

    MQM is not a political party, they are gangster,killers: every Pakistani know about them and i think this is the high time Chief Justice should ban this organization and I request British Government to through back this nonsense Altaf back to Pakistan. They crossed all the limits of civilized nation. I would like to request all Urdu speaking to come out and speak against MQM. This is too much, we can not remain silent now, enough is enough.
