IGP wants concrete steps to improve city’s traffic system

Sindh Inspector General of Police Wajid Ali Khan directed the Karachi DIG Traffic on Friday to take concrete measures to improve traffic flow and solve traffic jam problems in the city.
Taking notice of different news reports about traffic problems, the IGP ordered preparation of a working paper in accordance with the recommendations of senior officials of the city government’s Traffic Engineering Wing and the Motor Vehicle Registration Department. He directed that implementation on the rain emergency plan should be ensured to maintain smooth traffic flow during rains.
“Encroachments along various streets also need to be removed to improve traffic flow,” he said. The IGP further directed that unnecessary speed breakers should be removed with the cooperation of the city government administration. Khan said that the performance of Motor Vehicle Inspection Department needs to be improved and issuance of fitness certificates to the passenger buses should be kept n check.
He also directed that rules and regulations on driving, over-loading, entry of trailers and heavy vehicles in the city and violation of ladies compartments should be implemented. “The SPs of traffic zones would monitor the situation while the DIGs traffic concerned would submit the progress reports of their respective zone,” he said. He also ordered launch of awareness campaigns for motorcyclists about the importance of helmets and passengers on the importance of boarding buses at bus-stops.
The IGP directed that services of police volunteers should be used to improve the traffic system and assistance and cooperation of the print and electronic media should also be sought to resolve traffic-related problems.
