Shabbir Iqbal moves up front

Shabbir Iqbal, the top ranked professional golfer of the country, now contesting in the three-round 1st Sayid Paper Open Golf Tournament at the Defence Raya Golf Course, revelled in the second round of this big championship. By returning a suitably sizzling score of 4 under par 68, he emerged as the leader after two rounds with scores 73, 68 and an aggregate of 141. While Shabbir irritated himself in the first round on Wednesday through some unwanted stroke losses, on the second day he looked his best taking over the leaderboard, as the other contenders blew hot and cold and failed to intercept his dominant march to victory by failing to match his brilliance.
Teeing off from the 10th hole on Thursday, Shabbir had two pars on the 10th and 11th and rolled in birdies on the 12th, 13th and 16th with regulation pars on the other holes on the back nine. Moving to the front nine he was again at ease with six perfect looking pars and two birdies on holes 2 and 5.The lone bogie came his way when he missed the green on the par 3, 17th and the resultant chip was stubbed a little short. Going into the final spell, Shabbir has a one stroke edge over Muhammed Asif and four stroke advantage over Shafiq Masih, two of his nearest rivals.
As for Asif of Garrison Golf Club, he may not be a prominent ranked player, but has managed to show his prowess by carding a 70 on the first day and 72 in the second round which gives him the honor of playing in the final group on Friday and getting noticed as a possible frontrunner.
Shafiq Masih the first days leader let too many faults creep into his short game and his modest score of 76 on the second day slides him to the third slot, as he moves towards the final lap of 18holes. The opportunity is still there if he can put up a spectacular display.
The top professionals of the country have started to adore and love this golf course and though the difficulty of some holes caused mistakes and errors they vowed to come here to hone their skills.
Final days round promises plenty of sharp edged play as some upcoming champions crave for moments of glory. Adil Jehangir, in particular looks forward to surprise the top one.
At the conclusion of the championship the prize award ceremony will be held at 6 pm with Faisal Sayid of Sayid Paper Mills as chief guest.
