President Asif Ali Zardari has appealed to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif as well as other political parties to put aside political differences and take measures to help the flood-hit people as this was not the time to indulge in political gimmicks.
According to media reports and sources, President Zardari asked Nawaz to “be sensible” and that instead of holding public rallies in Lahore, he should strive to take measures against the dengue epidemic and come to Sindh to help flood victims. Zardari said further that the PML-N chief should adopt a positive attitude and stop criticising the military because people were already frustrated with political confrontations.
The president said the majority during former president Farooq Leghari’s tenure could not save democracy. “It takes years to build democracy but seconds to ravage it,” the president added. Zardari said the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) had given enormous sacrifices to restore democracy to the country and had also restored the constitution to its true shape and given provinces autonomy.
“All parties have to play their individual roles for stability of the democratic system,” said Zardari. He said further that floods had caused massive destruction in Sindh; Punjab was under the grip of dengue, and in light of such a bleak scenario the people did not need political speeches but practical measures.
“My house in Nawabshah is open to the PML-N leader,” Zardari said. Asking Nawaz to act wisely, the president said: “I hope the time does not come that neither he is able to visit my jail cell nor I can visit him.”
