The Sindh Rangers director general (DG) told the Supreme Court during the hearing of a suo motu case on the Karachi violence on Wednesday that the problem in Karachi was more complicated than Waziristan.
“There are areas in the city, where police and Rangers face difficulties acting, but the situation will be brought under control,” Sindh Rangers DG Ijaz Chaudhry said. He said having participated in operation Rah-e-Nijat in Waziristan, he “found the problem of Karachi more complex”. He said because of biased and unequal development projects in the city, the provincial capital was divided along political and ethnic lines. “Even government hospitals have been affected by this ethnic divide and today an injured person of one ethnicity can’t be taken to a government-run hospital influenced by another ethnic group,” said the Rangers chief. He said terrorists used the local offices of political parties to carry out their criminal activities and as it was done under the flags of the parties, law enforcement agencies were unable to take stern action against them.
ISI: The Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) is due to brief the judges in chamber at the Supreme Court today (Thursday). Attorney General (AG) Moulvi Anwar-ul-Haq assured the court that the intelligence agency’s report on the Karachi violence and targeted killings would be presented, but requested that it be seen in the chamber. Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry remarked that the court did not need to be taught the law and such requests should not be made since they were premature.
MIRZA: Earlier, the CJ said during the hearing that the court would not summon Dr Zulfiqar Mirza and if he had some concerns, he should present all his apprehensions in an affidavit and file a constitutional petition, only then would investigation be conducted into his allegations. On Wednesday, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) finally filed an application in the Supreme Court through former education minister and sacked judge of the Sindh High Court Qazi Khalid. He stated in the application that the MQM had reservations with the Karachi situation. “The Urdu-speaking people are being kidnapped and killed and 230 workers of the MQM have been killed since 2008,” he stated.
