50 Indian lawyers to attend conference today

Over 50 lawyers of the Indian Supreme Court Bar Association will cross the Wagha border on Friday (today) at 10am. The lawyers are to enter the country to attend a three-day conference organised by Pakistani lawyers in Lahore which will be chaired by the chief justice.
President Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan (SCBAP) Asma Jahangir said that the delegation was arriving to take part in the conference called “Justice For all and Impunity for None” which starts on Friday at 3.30pm at the Avari Hotel, Lahore. She said that Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Chaudhry will preside over the conference which is to be attended by hundreds of local and foreign lawyers and bar-presidents of the neighbouring countries. Asma said that the three-day conference was likely to be attended by the former presidents of SCBAP. Iftikhar chaudhry will address the audience regarding the issues of people’s security and the rule of law on September 9. Former president Fiji Law Society will speak of his experience of dealing with the legal system during internal conflicts. Speakers from Pakistan on this topic are Talib Rizvi and Hina Jilani. Babur Sattar will initiate a discussion on reforming the criminal justice system. Punjab Acting Prosecutor General Anwar Khan Gondal, Zahid Hussain Bokhari and solicitor-advocate from the United Kingdom Amjad Malik will contribute towards this topic. The topic “Justice and Impunity: Its Portrayal by the Media” will be addressed by renowned journalists Talat Hussain, Ayaz Amir and Hamid Mir.
