152 dead, millions affected due to flooding in Sindh

Heavy rains and subsequent flooding has almost destroyed 21 districts of Sindh, as 14 more people were killed in rain-related incidents on Wednesday taking the death toll to 152. A fresh data release by the Sindh government said 13,633 villages have been destroyed affecting a population of 4,839,919, while standing crop on 2,215,962 acres of land have been washed away.
The rain that started on August 6 still continues in various districts of Sindh, leaving no option for thousands of people to live in the open without proper shelter, the report issued by Provincial Disaster Management Authority Sindh (PDMA) said. It said people of the most-affected district Badin are passing through a very difficult time as 3,710 villages in the district have almost been washed away. Around 214,940 acres of standing crop has been completely destroyed and 438,099 houses have been damaged. The government has been able to set up only 139 relief camps in the district.
In Umerkot, 1,691 villages have been damaged, 180,851 people affected, crops on 68,170 acres of land destroyed and 32,164 houses have been damaged.
The report said in Tando Muhammad Khan, 1,555 villages have been damaged, 267,368 people affected, 131,893 acres of standing crop washd away and 50,800 houses have been damaged.
About Tharparkar, it said 1,357 villages have been damaged, 127,454 people have been affected, crops on 10,589 acres of land been destroyed while 15,458 houses have been damaged.
In Hyderabad district, 318 villages have been damaged, 88,007 people been affected, and crops on 46,091 acres of land been destroyed by the floods.
In Kambar-Shahdadkot district, 11 villages have been damaged, 145,030 people have been affected and crops on 75,480 acres of land been damaged.
Other affected districts include, Ghotki, Jacobabad, Kashmore, Khairpur, Matiari, Mirpurkhas.
The Sindh government claims that it has set up 1,787 relief camps in the 21 districts but the affected people say they have been living in miserable conditions.
