The officials of intelligence agencies, known as “angels” in the country, are helping Rangers arrest notorious assassins, sources told Pakistan Today on Wednesday.
They said the officials of the intelligence agencies were providing timely information to the Rangers to carry out surprise raids and search operations in areas believed to be the strongholds of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).
After immense pressure from the army, the Rangers started indiscriminate surgical operations in areas that were being ignored by police and themselves because of the policy of reconciliation of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government, the sources said.
They said the Formation Commanders of the Pakistan Army held a meeting in Rawalpindi on Saturday in which they expressed resentment over the bloodshed in Karachi and strongly pressed for indiscriminate operation in the city after feeling that Interior Minister Rehman Malik was making a mockery of the operation just to hoodwink the nation.
Malik was ‘requested’ to immediately leave Karachi, which finally paved way for fair and impartial action against notorious killers, sources told Pakistan Today.
After the army’s intervention, nearly 20 alleged ‘master assassins’ belonging to the major ethnic party of Karachi have been rounded up by the Rangers on the information provided by the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Military Intelligence (MI) and Rangers Intelligence.
According to the sources, the army had expressed complete dissatisfaction with the one-sided and cosmetic operation headed by Malik.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) had officially issued the statement in this regard, after which Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani received a briefing on the Karachi violence from Corps Commander General Zahirul Islam and Rangers Sindh Director General Maj Gen Ijaz Chaudhry. The army chief then ordered the Rangers chief to conduct an indiscriminate operation. Sources said the army chief later met President Asif Ali Zardari and discussed the situation and took him in confidence for the action.
