Dengue teams at govt OPDs to work 24 hours

Health Secretary Jehanzeb Khan has issued instructions to improve diagnostic and treatment facilities for dengue patients in government hospitals. Out patient departments (OPDs) of hospitals would remain open round the clock and a dengue response team of doctors and paramedics would remain on duty to attend the patients, he added.
Khan was presiding over a meeting of principals of medical colleges and the medical superintendents of the city’s government hospitals on Tuesday. Besides, additional secretaries of the department, Punjab Health director general, Institute of Public Health dean, Punjab Blood Transfusion Service director, Punjab chief bacteriologist and other concerned officers attended the meeting. The meeting decided that deputy medical superintendent would monitor administrative matters in OPDs whereas a senior registrar would supervise the treatment facilities of dengue patients.
Khan directed the officials that a senior consultant should also remain available to supervise clinical activities. He said pamphlets pertaining preventive measures and guidelines for dengue patients should also be distributed among dengue patients for their awareness. The meeting decided that pathological labs of medical colleges would also perform blood test of dengue patients.
IPH Dean Prof Yaqoob Qazi said that dengue was a domestic mosquito which fed on clean water, therefore, people should not store water in open pots, tubs or water tanks.
He said that stagnant water in room-coolers, flower pots, open water tanks, swimming pools and water falls were the breeding grounds for this mosquito. He advised that stagnant water should be drained and people must fumigate their bedrooms,
washrooms and stores to get rid of
the mosquitoes.
Education minister wants steps against dengue: Punjab Education Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman on Tuesday directed officials of the education department to take steps against dengue by involving the health department.
He instructed officials of the Punjab Higher Education Department and Punjab Schools Education Department to make efforts to secure institutions and students and advised officials to sent him a report in this regard on a daily basis. Mujtaba said that all headmasters at government schools should take steps on their own level and provide awareness to students about dengue.
