Mirza ‘deeply disappointed’ with President Zardari

Former Sindh senior minister Zulfiqar Mirza on Saturday said he was deeply disappointed with President Asif Ali Zardari, but whatever he had alleged against the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Rehman Malik were not a charge-sheet against Zardari.
Talking to a private news channel, Mirza said it was Benazir Bhutto’s sacrifice that helped the PPP come into power. He added that the people should not pin hopes on the judiciary and the government, adding that he was being told not to speak his heart out for the last three months.
Mirza said not even a single target killer belonged to the PPP and that he himself felt responsible for the killing of Rehman Dakait, as the police was under his command then. “It was a mistake to order Dakait’s arrest,” he added. The former PPP firebrand said if someone from the Awami National Party (ANP) had ever killed someone, it was in revenge, adding that ANP leader Shahi Syed was not a killer. He said the MQM always drew 50 percent of its total vote at gunpoint.
Mirza said all his assets were in the country and he paid all his taxes. He said he did not own any sugar mills and was only a share-holder. The former Sindh home minister said that had it been his call, he would have been reluctant to make Rehman Malik even a station house officer, let alone the interior minister. He said the MQM quit the coalition government because of him and he visited Nine Zero just because he was part of the PPP. Mirza said he was not afraid of anything since people who valued honour would protect him.
“I admit I belong to one of the biggest land-owning feudal class. I have been an accused in many cases, including drugs smuggling. I never had any licence to sell liquor,” he said, adding that he drank and even bought his friends drinks at times. Meanwhile, in an interview with another TV channel, Mirza said he had provided evidence against the MQM to Inter Services Intelligence Director General Ahmed Shuja Pasha.
