A 22-year-old man who had been arrested on robbery charges died during Eid holidays at the Allama Iqbal Police Station.
Police said Mubashir Ali and Nadeem, residents of Pattoki were being interrogated for their alleged involvement in a robbery case.
Mubashir Ali, 22, was brought to a hospital after alleged police torture during the investigation, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
DIG Operations Ghulam Mehmood Dogar ordered registration of case against Assistant Superintendent Police Ijaz Kabir, Sub-Inspector Asghar, and 4 constables after the relatives of the deceased raised hue and cry over the alleged killing.
Mubashar’s family said the police had told them the young man had a heart attack in lock-up. Police sources said an enquiry into the incident was underway.
Afghan dies in Kot Lakhpat Jail: Meanwhile, a 30-year-old inmate of Kot Lakhpat Jail died on Friday morning. The jail authorities said the death was a result of some ilness.
The inmate, Haji Shah Mohammad, was an Afghan national and had been serving a jail term for crossing the border into Pakistan without valid documents.
“Haji had been suffering from high fever for a week,” said one of the caretakers at the jail. Haji was admitted to Jinnah Hospital on Thursday night where he later died. The body was moved to the morgue.
Though doctors are yet to confirm the cause of the death, health officials fear that he might have died of dengue fever.
Fires: In another incident, a factory caught fire on the fist day of Eid. Police said the factory fire gutted valuables worth thousands of rupees. At least 5 snorkels of the Fire Brigade took several hours to extinguish the fire. Similarly, various houses located in Mughalpura, Shahdra Town and West Cantt neighbourhoods caught fire because of short circuiting. The fires reduced valuables worth thousands to ashes.
Bomb hoax at DHA cinema: Several parents lost their children while many people were injured in a stampede at the DHA Cinema after a bomb hoax created panic on Thursday.
Police said a group of youngsters led by a youth named Amir made the hoax call to the DHA cinema administration when Indian movie “Bodyguard” was being played there.
The bomb threat created panic and people ran out of the cinema which led to a stampede.
The DHA administration refused to talk about the incident when contacted. Police registered a case against the accused youngsters.
CCPO lauds policemen: Meanwhile, Lahore Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Ahmad Raza Tahir appreciated policemen for their efficient duty during Eid. In a statement issued here on Friday, the CCPO said that it was because of the efficiency of Lahore Police that Eid celebrations ended peacefully. He said the people of Lahore were proud of the city police. CCPO also appreciated the traffic officers and traffic wardens for their efficiency in maintaining traffic flow.
