Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani could have overthrown the PPP-led coalition government if he (the general) had wanted to, but he had no such plans, a private TV channel quoted WikiLeaks on Saturday.
Leaking another US diplomatic wire, the whistleblowers website disclosed a conversation between former US ambassador to Pakistan Anne Patterson and the army chief in which the latter expressed unhappiness over a clause in Kerry-Luger Bill which was about the army’s autonomy.
According to the leak, Gen Kayani told the (then US) ambassador that he could have overthrown the (then newly-established) government during the longmarch –staged for the restoration of judiciary in March 2009 – if he had wanted to, but no such thing was on his mind.
The leaked cable also revealed that Gen Kayani had confessed to the huge pressure he was under the Kerry-Luger Bill as the corps commanders meeting was around the corner and he had to give them some satisfactory answers. He even had wanted to release a statement about the same, but couldn’t come with anything, the leak added.

  1. I find it a little funny. Like seriously, what exactly is the being 'leaked' in it?! who doesn't know already that an army general in Pakistan can overthrow a government plus who wouldn't but know that each & every military related point of kerry-lugar bill was trying to restrict the control of army so why wouldn't be the-then Army chief under pressure? I seriously have started scrutinizing wikileaks though i'd reserve my second thoughts!

  2. There is no need for any planning. It all depends on the mood of our Army. As said by Ch. Shugat that only One jeep with a Major and a truck full of soldiers is enough. Later we all know that even our so called Azaaaad Adliya will bow their heads as usual. I hope this does not take place in future but reality can not be ruled out. We have many who are always fond of riding two horses at a time.
