Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif said on Saturday the current government was not democratic as President Asif Ali Zardari was running the country instead of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).
He told the Pakistan Journalists Forum in Jeddah that the PPP comprised competent people. He said late PPP leader Benazir Bhutto looked for long term democracy rather than sharing power, adding that no one would have dared to interfere in the internal affairs of Pakistan if true democracy existed.
Nawaz said the government should look for a constitutional solution to resolve the Karachi crisis and should not seek the army’s help. He said the situation in Balochistan was getting dangerous as a sense of deprivation was growing among the Baloch, adding that the military regime was responsible for the grim situation.
Commenting on Zulfiqar Mirza’s statement against the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Nawaz said the accusations should be investigated thoroughly. He said the PPP supported the army and accusations of it being against the army were ridiculous.
He said it was time that people came out on the streets to seek solutions to their problems, adding that the masses were asking him to start a long march. He said inflation and unemployment had forced people to commit suicide, adding that the government was not serious enough in resolving problems of the common man.
