Punjab University (PU) Vice Chancellor (VC) Dr Mujahid Kamran urged the leadership on Friday to allocate at least four percent of the total budget to education every year as education was the key to Pakistan’s prosperity and development.
The VC said the prosperity, solidarity and sovereignty of a nation were directly related to its policies, education and continuous struggle. He said in Pakistan, the educational policies kept changing as the leadership changed, and no government ever allocated sufficient national budget to the sector.
“Strengthening education sector by investing more, increasing literacy rate, research, primary, secondary and higher education should be a clear-cut task before us. For this, we must form a law to invest at least four percent of the total national income in the sector,” said the VC.
Greeting the varsity teachers, students and employees on Eid, the VC said one of the basic purposes of Ramadan followed by Eid was to develop unity among the Muslims. He said: “On this occasion, every Pakistani must make a commitment to himself and his nation that he would play a vital role in combating internal and external threats faced by the country.” He said in order to make Pakistan self-reliant and sovereign, the nation needed to strengthen its position in the world, which was only possible through promoting education.
Kamran said in a country like Pakistan where policies changed with changing government, long-term policies were not a solution; instead, short-term, target oriented policies could be more effective and fruitful. He urged the teachers to contribute to their profession with devotion, commitment and untiring effort and feel their responsibility in training the youth into well-learned and competitive manpower.
