People demanded quick justice in the case of the girl who was raped by Irfan, 21, within school limits on September 1. “Such sort of men should be executed in public”, said one of the protesters. He said that the girl was like her own daughter and an example should be made out of men involved in such activities.
Anjum, who came from the same neighbourhood located near Khokar Road, said that they have no confidence in police. He said that it took police two days to arrest the accused. Anjum said that protesters wanted police to hand over the rapist to them so that they could teach him a lesson. The protest lasted for about two hours, after which the SP City negotiated with the angry protesters and asked them to reconsider their demand.
The Badami Bagh SHO said that the protesters were in deep agony, as they wanted police to handover the teacher to them. “The mob just wanted to beat the man to death like the Sialkot incident”, the SHO said. Senior policemen, seeking anonymity, said that such demands were on the rise now. One of them said that it was the building mistrust on police machinery and the judiciary, which was forcing people to make such radical decisions.
According to the FIR, which was registered by the mother of the victim, Tehmina, the victim was a student of class five and went to a school located nearby. The FIR reported that on the second day of Eid, the girl left her house to get some edibles when Irfan intercepted her and asked her to go to school despite it being a holiday. Irfan was a teacher at the same school where the girl went and also the brother of the school principal.
The FIR reported that when the girl did not return home after much time, Tehmina started asking people whether they had seen her daughter. Shaukat Ali, a neighbour, had seen the girl and Irfan going towards the school. Tehmina, along with neighbours Shakat Ali, Asif and Sajjad went inside the school where Irfan was caught red-handed raping the girl on the school’s second floor. As soon as Irfan saw Tehmina and her neighbours, he jumped through the window of the school onto the roof of an adjacent building and managed to flee. Two brothers of the offender were taken into custody by police the very next day, which included the principal of the school and on late Friday night, police also arrested Irfan. After completing some legalities, Irfan was shifted to jail.
