Information Minister Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said on Tuesday that there was no justification for demanding a judicial commission to probe the allegations leveled by Dr Zulfiqar Mirza against the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Interior Minister Rehman Malik, and the Supreme Court was the right forum to examine the allegations as the apex court had already taken suo motu notice of the Karachi situation.
“The Supreme Court is the right forum to move if anyone has documentary evidence against anyone. The court is investigating the matter already. The court had sought facts about those involved in targeted killings and the political groups backing them. The government has submitted the required data to the court. All such concerns would be redressed by the court now,” said the information minister in response to questions raised by reporters at a press conference held here at the PID media centre.
Asked what the response was by the MQM leadership to Mirza’s allegations, Firdous said the MQM leaders had expressed confidence in the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leadership in their press conference in Karachi, endorsing the government’s point of view. This reflected that they were satisfied with the action taken by the PPP leadership against Mirza, said Firdous.
