With no end in sight to unabated violence in the city, the provincial government on Thursday granted extension of three more months in the special powers given to the Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) for maintaining law and order situation in the city.
An official notification was issued after a meeting held at the Sindh Chief Minister’s House. Besides Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik and Religious Affairs Minister Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah also attended the meeting.
Shah is playing an active role in political and administrative measures being made for restoration of peace in Karachi under the directives of President Asif Ali Zardari. At the meeting, the overall law and order situation of Karachi was reviewed and joint measures adopted by provincial and federal agencies, police and Rangers to combat activities of criminals, terrorists, extortionists and other anti-social elements.
It was stated in the handout that participants of the meeting expressed their satisfaction over the results achieved of action taken against criminals in various localities. It was decided at the meeting that concerted efforts be further coordinated and action against criminals and anti-social elements taken on priority. Under special powers, Rangers can conduct raids and make arrests in line with the powers given to the police.
