MQM seeks to help SC

Central leaders of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Dr Farooq Sattar and Haider Abbas Rizvi, met the Supreme Court registrar on Thursday to become party in a suo motu notice against targeted killings in Karachi.
They told Supreme Court Registrar Dr Faqir Hussain that the MQM wished to assist the court in the matter. Hussain apprised them about the rules of becoming party to the case and also told them that they could seek opinion of their legal experts in this regard. The registrar told the MQM leaders that if they had any kind of proof regarding the Karachi unrest and targeted killings, they could present it in the court.
Later, talking to reporters, Sattar said the MQM was an aggrieved party in the Karachi unrest, adding that it was pondering as to how it could assist the court on the suo motu notice against killings in Karachi. He said the MQM could file an application today (Friday) to become party in the case. A five-member special bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Shakirullah Jan, Justice Nasirul Mulk, Justice Tariq Parvez and Justice Ghulam Rabbani will hear the case today.
