MNA Aqeel, others released in escape case

An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Wednesday released Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MNA Anjum Aqeel and his 33 companions, who allegedly helped him escape from police custody, due to a lack of evidence.
Anjum Aqeel and others were produced in the court of ATC judge Malik Muhammad Akram, who adjourned the hearing until August 31. During the hearing, police produced a discharge report in the court, according to which police did not find any evidence regarding the involvement by the detainees in the Anjum’s escape from police custody, while no illegal item was recovered from their possession.
The court acquitted the accused from the case on the police’s request. It directed the police to present a challan on the next hearing. Thirty three 33 people were arrested over charges of assisting Anjum Aqeel escape from the custody of Shalimar police station’s officials.
