The National Exhibition of Calligraphy 2011 will be held on Friday by the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) in connection with the holy month of Ramzan. According to the press statement issued on Wednesday, over 200 works by 91 young artists as well as renowned masters will be on display.
Amongst them will be works by Sadequain, Hafiz Muhammad Yousuf Sadeedi, Syed Anwar Hussain, Nafees Raqam, Hanif Ramay, Shakir Ali and Gulgee to pay tribute to the master painters. Participating artists include Elahi Bux Mattee, Rasheed Butt, Saeed Akhtar (Sitara-e-Imtiaz), and Aftab Ahmed Khan. The ten best works selected will receive awards at the opening ceremony.
Calligraphy is considered one of the oldest media of artistic expression in the Islamic world and has since its beginning held the status as the most excellent medium for the depiction of the Quran.
The event is a regular feature of the PNCA, arranged annually in the last week of Ramzan to promote and project this fine art form. “Calligraphy is part of the Muslim heritage and a source of mental and spiritual satisfaction,” the statement said.
The exhibition is presenting a variety of work ranging from traditional forms to modern, experimental renderings that introduce subjective elements such as modern politics, warfare and gender issues while drawing on the traditional style. The exhibition will continue until October 2.
