A consortium of universities formed by the European Union Commission is offering scholarships for the students and faculty members of some Asian seats of higher learning including the University of Karachi (KU), the university’s pro vice chancellor Prof Dr Shahana Urooj Kazmi said on Tuesday.
“Over 100 scholarships would be offered to the students and faculty members of Asian universities including the KU. Other universities are of India, China, Bangladesh and Nepal,” she said.
Under the programme known as Erasmus Mundus, the scholarships for European universities for the period 2011-2014 are fully-funded.
Dr Kazmi, who is the coordinator in Pakistan for this scholarship programme, said that an introductory seminar will be organised at the KU Campus on August 25 at 10 am for all those interested in securing such scholarships for the year 2012.
During the seminar, the attendees would be briefed about details of the scholarships finalised at the recently held meeting in Beijing.
She said that there are three target groups for these scholarships: the students and staff registered at the KU, the students registered in higher educational institutions and the students, who are in vulnerable, deprived and disaster-hit areas of the country.
Dr Kazmi said that seven Karachi University students were selected for these scholarships last year and they are about to proceed to the respective universities.
