Terming the demand of calling the army for restoration of peace in Karachi as unnecessary, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Lahore President Samina Khalid Ghurki said on Tuesday that the army option has been used in the past to restore law and order in the port city but no positive results could be achieved.
Talking to journalists, she said that disengaging the army from western borders where it was fighting terrorists would not be fruitful. Ghurki said that the army was making achievements in the ongoing war against terror owing to which it should not be deployed in Karachi. Army deployment in a city such as Karachi would create enormous problems, as the issue was purely political and its solution could only be attained with political will and efforts, the PPP Lahore president said.
Ghurki urged the Awami National Party (ANP) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) to put aside their differences for a greater cause and help the PPP-led government in restoration of peace in Karachi, as this was not only vital for their own existence but important for the country’s sovereignty as well. She said that the MQM should avoid asking the PM to resign.
