ASER education survey to be conducted in 84 districts

Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) Pakistan 2011 survey will be conducted in a total of 84 districts including 82 rural districts and two urban districts and to be shared with the key stakeholders by mid-January 2012.
ASER Pakistan 2011 Survey was initiated in the National Workshop which hosted associates and volunteers from most of the 84 participating districts on Wednesday, according to a press release.
South Asian Forum for Education Development (SAFED) had been undertaking a rural household-based learning assessment survey, called ASER Pakistan testing the reading and numeric skills of children between 5-16 years of age since 2008 -2009. Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi Director Programs Baela Raza Jamil presented on ASER emphasised how the 18th Amendment and article 25A had changed the education scenario in the country. She stressed upon a need for citizen-led action to improve the state of education in Pakistan.
Amima Sayeed, TRC, Mazhar Siraj, DFID, Dr Waqar Ashraf, FDE, T.M. Qureshi, Advisor CAD and Nargis Sultana, OSI, participated in the panel discussion on citizens-led initiatives.
NEAS Director Jamil Bajwa and Arshad Bhatti from Civil Junction were amongst the main speakers. They emphasised importance of campaigns such as ASER to instigate citizens to act for themselves.
ASER Pakistan is being facilitated by SAFED. SAFED is envisaged to provide a platform for discussion and debate on issues pertinent to the education sector in the South Asian region.
