The consumers faced problems in getting sugar from Sunday and Sasta bazaars on Sunday while the prices of vegetables and fruit remained almost stable. Each customer could get only one kilogramme sugar bag and they were found complaining that their consumption was more than that. Chicken was also not available at many stalls to the dismay of many customers.
“The government takes very strange steps such as rationing only one kilogram sugar to each consumer. They should know that consumption of all commodities rises in Ramadan,” complained a housewife Rabia Ikram, adding that the policymakers overlooked ground realities and just took irrational decisions. The shortage of sugar was because of the fact that the government would withdraw subsidy on sugar at the end of Ramadan and that was why its supply had been decreased, said a shopkeeper at Township Model Bazaar.
The market rate of sugar is Rs 74-78/kg but in Sunday and Sasta bazaars, it is available for Rs 65/kg. The customers also faced problems in buying chicken because of short supply at the Sunday bazaars. Customers said mutton and beef available at the bazaars were also of substandard quality. Compared with last week’s prices, in vegetables, the price of onions decreased by Rs 4/kg and it was sold for Rs 20/kg.
The price of tomatoes decreased by Rs 6/kg and it was sold for Rs 28/kg. The price of spinach decreased by Rs4/kg and it was sold for Rs 18/kg.
