National Assembly Speaker Dr Fahmida Mirza has said that around 1.4 million population of Badin district has been badly hit by the recent heavy rains besides heavy damage to infrastructure.
Both federal and provincial governments were striving hard to provide maximum relief to flood affected people, she said while addressing the officials of departments concerned here at Darbar Hall on Monday.
She said further that after completion of rescue and relief work in the affected areas, rehabilitation of rain hit victims would be started.
She added the National Disaster Management Authority had started telemedicine system with an objective to provide medical facilities to rain affected people on modern lines besides provision of maximum relief facilities on behalf of the federal and provincial governments.
She said that due to closure of irrigation channels to save the people from flood, directives had been issued to install hand pumps in rain hit areas in order to overcome the shortage of drinking water.
She expressed reservations over the role of Red Crescent Society in carrying out relief work in effective manner in the district, however, said that there was a need of collaborated efforts to work for rain victims.
She said that besides heavy rainfalls, breaches in LBOD also caused huge devastation in the area therefore the government had decided to prepare a comprehensive report in consultation with the elected representatives of all the four districts so that effective strategy could be evolved to avert such losses in case of breach.
