‘Govt to set up community colleges soon’

The Sindh government would soon launch a pilot project for community colleges in collaboration with IBA Sindh, provincial Senior Education Minister Pir Mazharul Haq said on Sunday. “Work has already been started to establish community colleges in four districts of the interior of Sindh where there is a lack of educational facilities,” he said while addressing the faculty members of a seminar on literacy organised by the Mohammed Ali Jinnah University.
He said the government was trying to reach out to common people and provide facilities to those who could not afford higher education due to the cost of living. “It is the endeavour of our Pakistan People’s Party leadership and remained a dream of the founder of the party Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir to improve the literacy rate and narrow the gap between the rich and the poor,” he maintained.
The minister said that present government would also provide scholarship to students, who cannot afford education and there is need to take practical steps for this purpose. He observed that students in remote areas lack educational facilities like government-run and private institutions, however, poor students work very hard and their talent is unmatchable compared to those in urban areas.
Mazhar also urged the members of the civil society to play their due role to promote literacy in the country, particularly in remote areas. Earlier, the university’s president Abdul Wahab stressed the need for financial support to poor students by philanthropists, who can play an active role in progress and development of the country.
