Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that terrorism and extremism cannot be eradicated comprehensively without improving the people’s lot.
In a message on the World Humanitarian Day, the prime minister said the world could not enjoy enduring peace if some parts of it were afflicted by famine, poverty and natural calamities. He said the celebration of the World Humanitarian Day on Aug 19 reflected the acknowledgement and appreciation of valuable contributions of aid workers around the globe to improve the lot of humanity through their dedicated and selfless services.
The PM said: “The essential message of the holy month of Ramadan is to work for the wellbeing and uplift of downtrodden people and share their grief and sorrows. Let us vow to make the world a better place to live.”
Gilani said, “We are living in a highly complex world which is facing a variety of challenges and conflicts. A mix of armed conflicts, natural calamities, impending food crisis and financial and energy crises has made the people further vulnerable to a dangerous extent.” The prime minister said: “We live in a globalised society and share stakes in our collective wellbeing.” He lauded the services of the aid workers who came from all parts of the country and the world to rescue those trapped in the floodwaters in 2010 and those hit by the worst earthquake in 2005 in Pakistan. “Without their support, the gigantic task of countering the challenge of rehabilitation would not have been possible,” he said.
