In compliance with the Lahore Drug-Free City Project, the federal government has formulated a joint checking team on Thursday comprising officials of Pakistan Rangers, Federal Investigation Agency and Railways Police to plan detailed checking of passengers boarding Samjhota Express.
The team would also scrutinise luggage, especially contraband items to control drug trafficking to India through the train. Under the project, a scanning machine has already been installed at the Lahore Railway Station. Railways Police Assistant Inspector General (Crimes) Intizar Ahmad Qureshi said a comprehensive system of joint checking of Samjhota Express and all outgoing and incoming freight trains from India had been established to restrict drug smuggling. A certificate in this regard would be issued by the joint checking team and duly signed by all the agencies, he said. Around 120kg of bhang, 925g of charas and 135g of heroin were seized by the Railways Police from the Lahore Railways Station, he added.
