PIA thrash Omar Associates

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) finally put up an outstanding performance as they beat Omar Associates by 94 runs in the first Cool and Cool Twenty20 Night Tournament at the DHA Sports Club (Moin Khan Academy), on Tuesday night. Electing to bat first, PIA scored 174-7 and then bowled out Omar Associates for 80 in 16 overs. The result meant PIA finished third in Group A behind Saiyed Paper Mills and National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) while Omar Associates finished at the bottom of the table. For PIA, opener Shoaib Khan was the top scorer with a fine 55 runs that came off 46 balls and included three fours and as many sixes. Together with Faraz Ali (33 off 26), Shoaib added 77 runs for the first wicket in nine overs while Faisal Iqbal (25) and Sharyar Ghani (22) also added valuable contributions. Omar Associates never threatened PIA after losing half of their side in the ninth over. Faraz Ahmed, batting at number nine position, brought some respectability to his side’s score after hitting a 19-ball 18 while Ali Asad was the other batsman to reach double figures.

Ten teams to vie for four WC spots

As many as 10 teams will battle out for the four remaining places at the 2013 ICC Women’s World Cup in Dhaka from 14th to 25th November, the ICC has confirmed. Hosts Bangladesh will be joined by South Africa, Sri Lanka, Netherlands, Zimbabwe, USA, West Indies, Pakistan, Ireland and Japan as they bid to make the 2013 tournament in India. Australia, England, India and New Zealand already qualified for the event as they had played the semi-finals of the 2009 event, which was won by England in Australia.
