Nawaz demands snap polls

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday finally demanded immediate general elections in the country, saying they were the only solution to the Pakistan’s crises at the national and international level.
Talking to a private TV channel, he said the solution to all problems lied in snap polls, saying the country was in deep turmoil and problems could only be overcome if elections were held immediately. After the dissolution of government, all the political parties should go to the people and the people should decide the future of Pakistan, he added.
Replying to a question, Nawaz said that holding snap polls were not a difficult job. “The prime minister of Pakistan could do it easily by issuing an order,” he said. “When the PML-N’s government was dismissed in 1993, the court restored it, but then the president continued creating problems and we went for fresh general elections,” he added. “I talked to President Asif Ali Zardari on the issue four months ago but my advice was not heeded,” he said. He said further that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) alone could not be blamed for disobedience of court orders because the PML-Quaid had connived with the PPP to disobey the court.
He added that it was the responsibility of the nation to stand up against the government and ensure that no one played with their mandate. On supporting the PPP, Nawaz said that his party tried working with the PPP initially but there was no substance to the relationship. Nawaz, however, strongly opposed the unconstitutional dismissal of the government.
